Meet the Charleston Superintendent
DeAnna Bruce
DeAnna Bruce has been an educator for over 16 years.
In her most recent role as Managing Director of Schools, she coached and managed principals who saw 100% average growth on i-Ready reading and math and double-digit decreases in the percent of chronically absent scholars. She also supported the implementation of Illustrative Mathematics and Wheatley curricula across the region which has made way to increased student achievement growth year over year.
Prior to her role as MD, DeAnna served as a Founding Principal for a middle and high school in her hometown of Austin, TX for seven years. During her tenure at IDEA Bluff Springs College Preparatory, DeAnna led her campus to the highest gains in reading intervention in the network, an overall B+ rating with the Texas Education Agency alongside the implementation of Eureka Math and Wit and Wisdom, numerous awards for fiscal responsibility, over 90% staff satisfaction ,and a 97.5% average daily attendance of scholars. She also became known as the “Leader Factory” as her leaders had such strong results, they went on to take on many regional and national-level roles.
Prior to her principalship, DeAnna served as a Dean of Scholars for Uplift Education and taught 6th-9th grade reading as a Teach for America Corps member where she led her scholars to over a 96% proficiency on the state exam. She also wrote Common Core aligned lessons as a LearnZillion DreamTeam teacher which still garners thousands of views a month.
DeAnna earned her B.A. in Mass Media Arts from Clark Atlanta University and her M.Ed. Leadership from Southern Methodist University. She also attended the National Principal Academy Fellowship with Relay Graduate School and graduated with the highest honors.
DeAnna lives with her significant other and four children-ages 12, 8, 5, and 4. In her free time, DeAnna enjoys spending time with her family and attending different sporting events around the city.
She is excited to join Movement schools as the Regional Superintendent of Charleston and continue to scale her impact.
